An amazing insight into seedy, brutal London thru the perspective of Johnny and drifter on the run!
David Thewlis’ standout performance in this really hits home…but the amazing ensemble of British talent on display here really makes this a great movie!
Mike Leigh writes and directs a very powerful drama
Not a comedy - genius regardless

One of my favourite films of the 1990s also features one of the greatest turns from any actor in that decade. A stunning performance from David Thewlis, whose complex, brutal, intelligent drifter Johnny remains a phenomenal creation. His stunning speech to a security guard (Peter Wight) remains one of the greatest monologues of the past few decades, while all the more poignant as it was one of Katrin Cartlidge’s final performances. There are comedic moments, but don’t expect a laugh fest. Look out for early turns from blink and you’ll miss him Toby Jones, and other familiar faces such as Gina McKee and Ewen Bremner.

One of… if not the greatest film of all time. I’m sure there are many that won’t appreciate it as I do but I don’t care. This is kitchen sink drama of the highest accord with a devastating script, astonishing characterisation and a ruthless examination of humanity.
