The Secret Garden, a Sky original, tells the story of Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx ), a 10 year old girl sent to live with her uncle Archibald Craven (Colin Firth), under the watchful eye of Mrs. Medlock (Julie Walters) with only the household maid, Martha for company. The film is set in 1940s England at Misselthwaite Manor, a remote country estate deep in the Yorkshire moors. Mary begins to uncover many family secrets, particularly after chancing upon her cousin Colin, who has been shut away unwell in a wing of the house. Whist exploring the grounds of the Misselthwaite Manor, Mary discovers a wondrous garden and meets a local boy Dickon, who helps her fix stray dog Hector’s injured leg using the garden’s restorative powers. The three children adventure deep into the mysteries of the garden a magical place that will change their lives forever.

  • So disappointed!

As a fan of the original story and also the previous incarnations of TheSecret Garden, I was so disappointed with this production. Too much CGI and not enough of the story, felt it was ‘dumbed down’. Just my humble opinion......

  • Beautiful reimagining of a timeless classic

I thought the ‘90s version with Maggie Smith couldn’t be bettered. It can’t. However this version I found to be equally as charming. All the distinguished cast bring their characters to life expertly. All the filming elements - writing, directing, cinematography, score are all first rate. There’s nothing here not to like. Reading through some of the other reviews, I think some people are going stir crazy in this lockdown - lighten up folks.

The most proper casting I can ever imagine. Meanwhile, what happened in this movie... will be a mystery...? Just like their mysterious performance...and Why?... Please where are you my love!!!
  • A complete lack of soul and authenticity

The cinematography seems to be akin to Harry Potter which shows how much technology has advanced since the original with Maggie Smith and Kate Maberley. Unfortunately that’s the only positive, albeit barely. This film lacks any soul and nothing about the acting is authentic - it’s all stereotypical and forced. The script is boring and wooden, and there is a distinct lack of chemistry. It really pales in comparison to the original which was full of mystery and wonder. Replacing the robin with the dog was also a poor choice, and seems like a very Hollywood inclusion which this story absolutely doesn’t need. Frankly, this was a film that did not need to be made and doesn’t come close to the brilliance of the original. A really poor remake. Don’t waste your time.

Won’t buy or watch without it being 4K. I mean sky is normally amazing with 4K but they’ve not put this film on 4K. Lame and stupid if you ask me.
  • How to ruin a classic

From start to finish this was incoherent nonsense. Flashbacks and mist aplenty, couldn’t make up for the gaping holes in the plot, the complete lack of character development and ultimately a quite dull garden! The ‘lead’ character was played with full drama school ‘how to play a 1940’s toff’ gusto and made the role utterly unsympathetic and down right annoying. Julie Walters, usually fascinating even when reading a phone book, couldn’t manage to elicit any emotional response from the viewer be it sympathy or dislike - felt like she’d turned up in costume expecting to be on Downton. Firth’s appearances were scant and unmemorable and the rest of the cast might as well not have bothered clocking in. There are a number of adaptations of this classic book, I don’t know why they bothered with this one at all and if I were still a prospective viewer - I wouldn’t bother.
