From the visionary mind of writer director Brandon Cronenberg (Antiviral), Possessor is a game-changing sci-fi thriller about elite, corporate assassin Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough, Mandy). Using brain-implant technology, Vos takes control of other people's bodies to execute high profile targets. As she sinks deeper into her latest assignment, Vos becomes trapped inside a mind that threatens to obliterate her. Possessor features a stellar cast including Christopher Abbott (It Comes at Night, The Sinner), Rossif Sutherland (Guest of Honour), Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight).

One of the very few movies I’ve actually switched off, first ever as a bought/rented film. The premise was there but just over the top with the gore. Not for me.

Dull, plodding... trying to shock with scenes where blood loss seems to be the star. Perhaps I was just not in the mood. Turned it off before it was finished. Disappointing.
  • Excellent but oh my gory.

Great story and well acted/filmed. It is one of the, if not the most, gory films in places I’ve seen. So much so I had to look on bbfc to see if it was cut. Which it doesn’t appear to be. Well worth a look it is decidedly the film Cronenberg wanted to make. It’s not a b movie is an indie film.
  • Mistakes gore for story development

A hazy plot, forgettable script and an obsession with shock and gore over story. The central device of the effects of neural implants is based on a complete misinterpretation of the ethically-challenged work of Dr Robert Delgado (referenced in the b/w footage of the bull in one otherwise unexplained scene in this film). Fine to do a fantasy about this subject, but including footage of ‘science’ gives the wrong impression any of this film’s fantastical storyline is in any way possible. Elsewhere, the lack of context or depth to the character’s backgrounds gives the sense that either the writer / director don’t know what they are or don’t think it important to provide this information to the viewer. Really, why are any of the characters in this film actually doing the things they do? No insight is offered as to how neural implants allow one person to inhabit the bodies or psyches of others but never mind because look! Here’s a slow-moving, intense scene with blood, tears, cruelty and a shot of someone’s private parts to distract you.

Didn’t like it. It made gore boring. Goring if you will.

Mesmerising, cerebral body-horror genius. Not for the faint of heart.
  • Awesome!

Been looking forward to this and it didn’t disappoint. Awesome mix of sci-fi and horror, it grabs you from the start and doesn’t let go. Smart and intelligent too, it’s not just about sci-fi thrills and spills. However, it’s pretty violent and not for the feint-hearted. For me, this blew Tenet out of the window - very highly recommended!

Interesting concept, great acting and the most realistic blood you’ll ever see in a film. Overall I found the film rather unpleasant to watch
