Description

2049. A roboticist, George Almore is on the verge of a breakthrough. Stationed at a remote, secret facility, he has been working on a model that is a true, human equivalent android. His latest prototype, J3, is almost complete. Development of J3 has been achieved through two earlier prototypes, J1 and J2. Each prototype is an increasingly advanced version of his wife, Jules, who died in a brutal car crash. Driven by love for Jules, George has secretly skewed the focus of his work: developing the robots towards the goal of creating a simulacra of Jules. Through the different J-prototypes, George experiences aspects of his wife he never did when she was alive. And although each prototype develops their own love for George, their respective development gives their relationship with George individual characteristics. At the same time, Jules is still present in George’s life via a new form of life-extension technology: the Archive. However, when the Archive unit comes to a critical point of near-failure, it becomes more crucial than ever for George to complete the construction of J3 before he loses Jules completely. As his work approaches its final and riskiest stages, external forces threaten to discover and shutdown his facility while the introduction of the highly advanced J3 collapses the delicate 'family’ balance inside the facility.

Archive Is not an action film; there’s not a single explosion or a single bullet fired. It’s a robot film but I suggest that you think ‘Moon’ with faint echoes of ‘2001’ rather than ‘I Robot’ or ‘Terminator’. There are some intriguing ideas and concepts touched on around the relationship between human and robot but it goes beyond ‘I Robot’ and Asimov’s three laws and looks to the emotional rather than the purely behavioural aspects. It could even be described as a love story. The film does build slowly, it’s an intelligent film and it demands that you pay attention. The ideas and concepts are introduced and explained gradually and you do get to see an American with a cricket bat although we don’t get to know why. My only slight criticism is that I found the music a little intrusive at times.

No idea what some of these people have been watching for this to be the best film. I watched this becasue it had good reivews. It's slow, very slow. Has a naff story and well to be frank its just rubbish.

I had heard a couple of great reviews on this film, so was really expecting much more than it delivered (in all areas). I mean it’s ok, but not one that I’d recommend to anyone.
  • Good film but left wondering

It’s a cross between ex machine, silent running and source code. It’s a slow film but the clue is in the title. I think if you set your expectations correctly then it’s actually quite good. I’m glad there is an ending that explains what happened rather than some that leave you in limbo. All in all, not bad shame it wasn’t 4K, the music is good too.

Fell asleep and far too slow. I'd expect this on Netflix

One of the best Sci-fi films I’ve ever seen, one thing that I take away from it is that sooner or later science may take a step too far in keeping people alive beyond their lifetime

Really enjoyed it. Very well made, scripted, beautifully shot. Great acting. It would be too easy to think this was like Ex Machina. It is in terms of look, tempo and feel however the story turns out to be very different. Has a brilliant ending so credit for taking the story there. Will be looking forward the the Mr Rotherys next project.
