Description

Reimagining Roald Dahl's beloved story for a modern audience, Robert Zemeckis's visually innovative THE WITCHES tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. The boy and his grandmother come across some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, so Grandma wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world's Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.

  • Not for children

The fact that this is a children's film is insane. My 7 year old lost sleep for 4 days after watching the first 30 minutes of this film and I can see why. The faces were not age appropriate.
  • Doesn’t compare to the original

I love this story so I was so disappointed with this movie. The original conveys Dahl’s unique style, this is a 3rd rate comparison.

Worst remake I have ever seen!!!! It’s lazy and pointless
  • Cute-ish but doesn’t compare to the Original

If you watched the original film, you would not love this one. You might find it “ok”, but there is nothing that will… well, make you not roll your eyes. This film has more plot holes than an Emmental cheese and so many nonsensical scenes and events. Hathaway played OK, but everything else was ridiculous - not even hilarious camp. I almost went about the plot but didn't wanna spoil it, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to pay for this film.
  • Terrible

The acting from the lead roles is lacklustre, and feels like casting was a box ticking exercise rather than for talent. The CGI is terrible and laughable - voile have done better on my home MacPro laptop. If you’re going to remake something then please don’t make it a cringe fest.
  • Quite enjoyable

It’s quite an enjoyable film to watch, Chris rocks voice over is a bit annoying, I did enjoy the original as well, viewed them as different films, don’t think the new version deserves the hate it’s receiving.
  • Not suitable for children under 10!!

Decided to buy this for a lockdown movie night as a treat, after checking the rating was suitable and watching the trailer, my son (6yr old) was very excited to see it. Then when the first witch smiled and the girl looked in the mirror my son screamed like I’ve never heard. It was almost like he had a panic attack, he was shaking he found it so scary. I’m so angry there wasn’t any warnings before purchasing, it should be a 12 rating!!
  • Shockingly Bad🤯😤

I was excited for years when they announced a remake, then Anne Hathaway was cast, even more excited, and Octavia topped it off... Wow... this was embarrassing... Octavia was the best out of any of this, but she was hardly on screen... Terrible CGI, Drama club acting, to light and kid friendly. One of Anne’s worst movies. Stick with the classic 1990 original. Angelica IS your Grand High Witch. I can’t believe this is the director of Back to the Future...
  • Should have been a 12A!

Great film and I enjoyed it thoroughly. My only criticism is it’s quite dark for a children’s film. The rating should have been a 12A.
  • Dumbed down and bland

The simplified, uncomplicated, dumbed-down plot doesn’t allow for much fun or depth. The actors had little opportunity here to bring out their best, not their fault. Disney also couldn’t resist Americanising what is a British story in Britain. Maybe they could have done so, enriching it with American culture and atmosphere and made it well. But they didn’t. Watch the original movie instead. It’s not perfect, but vastly supremely to this.
