Description

A bold and strikingly original psychological chiller, heralding the arrival of a bold new voice in British cinema - debut director Rose Glass - and a breakout lead performance from Morfydd Clark, Saint Maud is a deeply unnerving must-see for film-lovers and adventurous horror fans alike. Live-in nurse Maud arrives at the home of Amanda, a famous dancer now frail from illness and trapped in her grand, isolated house. At first Amanda is intrigued by this religious young woman, who provides distraction from her failing health. Maud, in turn, is bewitched by her new patient. But Maud is not all that she seems. She is tormented by a violent secret from her past and by ecstatic messages she believes are directly from God. She becomes convinced she has been sent to Amanda not simply as a nurse, but to serve a divine purpose. As her grip on reality slides out of control, Maud's care turns into a deadly mission to save Amanda’s soul, by any means necessary.

The film is an intelligent narrative on religion and obsession but even with this at its arsenal it delivers minimal entertainment. The wings emerging at the end felt bolted on. The dropping to the knees a little jilted.
  • Very strange, very unusual.

Saw this at the cinema as the title and poster was intriguing - it’s certainly an interesting one but was a bit too strange for me. I do like folk horror which is a bit out there but this just didn’t take me. I’m sure many will love this one but others will just not enjoy it at all. It really left me wondering what it was all about.
  • Not quite as billed

I was expecting something with shock and horror, but instead got a slow, slow-burn art film - some great filming, characters and sets, BUT I kept being reminded of a very mild Carrie meets The Exorcist - without the scary bits. The only edge of the seat moments were when deciding whether or not to turn it off or wait to see if anything happened. We stuck it out to the end hoping for some redemption but it never materialised. Shame.

Slow burn character study. Really unsettling, beautifully shot and dripping with atmosphere. Up there with Hereditary in terms of new wave horror.

Maybe a Twisted drama. Don’t get your hopes up if you are looking for a scream. A few ‘shocks’ but nothing crazy.

I knew this’ll wouldn’t because you’re run of the mill horror but I wasn’t expecting something along the lines of hereditary. It was not anywhere’s near this level. Great acting but just a very boring film that failed to get much interest of build fear (for us) I’m glad it wasn’t too long but deffo not one I’d remember. Save your hard earned money.

I simply cannot understand the negative reviews for this amazing film. My only reasoning is that I don’t consider it a “ horror” film in the traditional meaning of the word so people are expecting “jumps & scares” . I think it’s more a film about loneliness and mental illness and it is beautifully acted . For me this is the first “ must-see” film of the year. Stunning .
  • A slow burner for adults....

I think the artwork and publicity for this film is wrong, it will make younger people into slasher style scares and those less patient feel incredibly let down. This isn’t a horror film in the sense of ghosts and monsters, it is based upon the horror of life, death and loss high is something generally older people can relate to. It’s a story about a young woman who is lonely, bored and feels desperately that she has to be decent person and do good things and it eventually takes her over her entire being. I recommend this film to people who enjoy in depth, psychological slow burners that leave you emotionally moved for a day or two afterwards, other prospective viewers take my advice, please swerve it!!

I am a huge fan of art house style horror and modern horrors like The Witch and Hereditary. I was really looking forward to this film. However it is painfully boring, and nothing interesting happens in the film.
