Description

From director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Bridget Jones’s Baby) comes a heartfelt romantic comedy inspired by the unforgettable music of George Michael. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) stars as Kate, who works as an elf at a year-round-holiday shop. Kate faces an endless streak of bad luck and poor decision-making until she meets Tom (Henry Golding, Crazy Rich Asians), a kind-hearted man with a mysterious past who challenges her cynical world view. It seems like nothing can keep this mismatched couple together, but sometimes you gotta listen to your heart... and you gotta have faith.

I’m not a mad Xmassy person per se. The main characters in this film are quite amusing, sad, funny and silently hopeful. There some lovely quirky bits dotted about, Emma Thompson may have had a hand in writing those. There is quite a surprising twist that might make your eyes leak a little but on the whole rather a lovely film.

One of the most boring films I have ever seen. Time passing is not a character arc. Emilia Clarke’s performance was really flat and uninteresting. I kept wondering to myself when an interesting story might actually begin and it never came; just a naff twist. Overall it is just an embarrassment of a film and it made me lose all respect for Emma Thompson.

A terrible terrible movie! Really bad!! The only reason it got 2 stars is because of George Michael’s music. They obviously spent a good portion of the budget on clearing the music. They should have spent it on scripting! A couple of funny moments I laughed at but the rest of the movie is dismal, so formulaic and predictable. The apparent male love interest can’t act for socks & it would be a disappointment if Emilia Clarke ended up dedicating her career to creating movies like this.

Simply wonderful Christmas movie to enjoy anytime of the year (watched 5 times already). Everything about this movie is enjoyable, cleverly writes and executed. A well written heartfelt comedy romance that’s warm, enchanting and has easily entered my top 10 Christmas movies along with the likes of Wonderful Life. In fact one truly wonders how this movie cannot be liked.

Picks up at the end a tiny bit, but generally flat and not particularly amusing.
