Description

When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter Annie (Toni Colette) and her husband (Gabriel Byrne) and their two children begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

I was lucky enough (actually I wasn’t lucky) to see this for free on amazon prime! It is so drawn out and boring- and to make it worse - the ending was ridiculous!
  • Excellent. This will be remembered

I am often disappointed with horror films because they generally don’t bring anything new to the table. This film is different, not because it’s themes are completely new but because it is handled well. The cast are strong and there is a truly unsettling feeling about the whole thing which is hard to achieve when everything in these types of films often seems derivative. I think Hereditary will be remembered as a strong and powerful piece of work. The makers of the recent Halloween reboot (sorry, Mr Carpenter) could learn from this director.
  • Great acting and script but...

The director should work in movies for children only. Really childish special effects that spoil the film. The director doesn’t understand that in horror, less is more! Totally disappointed.

If you don’t find it scary it’s because your not clever, it’s got a deep psychological level of fear that only the wisest will understand it’s not cheap and jumpy like Insidious or paranormal Activity 4 its about grief and the grief is the horror. Also has a satanic levels.
  • The director

I believe this director knows a lot more than he’s ever going to admit to.
  • Slow burner that burrows under your skin

You need to invest your time and focus if you want to get value out of this. It starts very slow and at times you’re not sure what you’re watching. The visuals and sounds become increasingly menacing and profane. If you like conventional horror films then this might not be a good choice. The trailer is a bit misleading, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The less you know about this film when you watch it, the more you’ll get out of it, even though it will leave you with questions about a few potential plot holes. It has, however, earned its place in the gallery of horror films that will be talked about by horror fans in the years to come.

If you like Horror movies that build up tension with acting and subtle scares here and there then it's for you. The last 10-15 mins are truly horrific and despite it being a slow burning movie I really enjoyed it. Some people may think it's boring but if you appreciate a horror without a scare every 5 mins then it's for you.
