Pares down the story of Dunkirk to three individual stories that represent the whole story. Beautifully structured. Clever and strong. I must have watched this film ten times now and will probably watch it a hundred times more.

an extreemely poor depiction of historic events. My father was part of the rearguard and the only thing he ever said about Dunkirk was how overpowering were the thousand upon thousand individuals all expecting the worst and hoping for a miracle. Also the noise was unrelenting both from shelling and bombing. He made it home thousands did not.
  • A completely wasted opportunity!

Very disappointed in this film, which seemed to be a 'half baked' attempt at retelling the story of what was no doubt an epic moment in history. All of the 'A' List stars in this film seem to be completely wasted in what turned out to be, for me anyway, a dull and uninteresting piece of cinematography, with absolutely no tension whatsoever! And what the hell was Tom Hardy's character doing flying around in a 'glider' Spitfire for ages after being shot up, still with the ability of being able to engage in combat shooting down a fully functional German fighter plane in the process, before landing perfectly intact on a wet beach!! Kenneth Branagh on the other hand spent the whole film pacing up and down the concrete 'mole' (long pier) doing not a lot, before cringing at the sight of a Junkers JU87 Stuka bomber attacking a British naval vessel, before watching it then miraculously turn into a Messerschmitt ME109 (the plane that is, not the naval vessel). Anyway, I won't labour the point but I did expect far more from Christopher Nolan, whose other films are far more exciting.Basically, if you wish to see a good war time based film, go watch Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, Fury, anthing other than Dunkirk, however good the original intentions were :-(

A stunning portrayal of one of the biggest military retreats in history and a touching tribute to those men who fought 🇬🇧✌️

Great war thriller. Don’t expect Saving Private Ryan, it’s its own beast
  • An opportunity to make a realistic film missed.

If you want a film that leaves no emotion unjerked, no plot cliche unused, no liberty with history not taken, maybe this is for you. And the camera work is pretty good. Just don’t think it’s accurate history any more than films like “The Dirty Dozen” were. If you want a depiction of the Dunkirk evacuation as it really was, and that sticks to history not the big book of movie cliches, try the John Mills film or any decent documentary or book on the subject. Put another way, one of my Uncles was a pre-war professional soldier and one of the soldiers lifted off the Dunkirk mole. This film ain’t how he described things. At all.

Many people say that this film is amazing (which is something I agree with) it looks beautiful! Crossed with the amazing visuals and excellent effects, it goes without talking about the elephant in the room if you like - the accuracy. This is a problem that is brought up by many as some parts of the film are historically inaccurate. E.G. the city perimeters being inside the city in the film but IRL the French had the perimeters outside of city in the Forrest’s and surrounding area. Despite these issues I highly recommend this film and it is one of my favourites to watch. It is definitely worth the money.
  • Poor, poor film with weirdo positive reviews

The only thing worse than this unrealistic, crap film is the positive reviews which quite frankly are disturbing Inaccurate( My father was there) poor acting from badly chosen actors. The plot is disjointed and odd , GENUINELY DON'T BOTHER.
