Description

Paterson is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey — they share the name. He’s also a poet, recording his daily observations and thoughts in the form of beautiful prose. Paterson thrives on routine: he drives his bus route, he goes home for dinner with his wife Laura, he walks his dog, he visits his local bar for one beer. By contrast, Laura’s world is ever-changing, with new projects and ideas striking her daily. During the course of one fateful week, Paterson experiences both triumph and disaster, and finds inspiration from the most unlikely source. A sublime new film from Jim Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left Alive), starring Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Golshifteh Farahani (Rosewater).

I notice that some reviews here say “the film is boring, nothing happens”, and yes, there are no huge reveals, twists, shocks....it’s not that kind of movie. It is gentle, warm, poetic (obviously), and beautiful. Adam Driver is a great actor and I find him to be really engaging here in his placid, steady, bus driver role. The poems are amazing, but that’s what Ron Padgett does...so no surprise there. I love Jim Jarmusch and I love Paterson.

I saw this film at our local arts cinema on my own and kept waiting for something, a plot twist or some development but....nothing, nothing happens. Since then I have talked to other people who enjoyed it but I can honestly say I got nothing out of this film despite trying hard. The character of Paterson's wife also irrated the pants off me living in a fantasy world of self indulgence. Sorry!

Very boring movie, would not recommend it. No story line. Nothing is happening. Poems are not good either.
  • Maybe not quite a comedy...

As a film about a very nice chap in which nothing much happen, it’s great and a good antidote to films in which a lot of bad takes place. However listing it as a comedy is a little misleading as I waited well over an hour just to smile wryly.
  • Boring X3

I appreciate art and poetry, but I must be honest, this film was boring! I found the poetry rather boring, and the story just, well, boring!

I read a synopsis of this somewhere and I thought straight away there's bound to be something better to watch, struck me as potentially bland. But I'd seen most of what was on offer at the local cinema so I decided what the hell. And I'm so glad I did. This is the first Jarmusch film I've seen and I'll certainly be watching more if they're of equal quality to this. Ok, not a lot happens and it's fairly repetitive but it's all put together so well, and the gradual deviations from the repetition keep you interested. Driver is very good as the, er, driver, and the rest of the cast are solid. And then there's the dog, making even more annoying noises than Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor but much more entertaining..
