Description

Susanna White directs this adaptation of John le Carré's best-selling novel from a script by Hossein Amini, with a cast headed by Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgård, Damian Lewis and Naomie Harris. Whilst taking a holiday in Marrakech, a young English couple Perry (McGregor) and Gail (Harris) bond with an enigmatic Russian businessman (Skarsgård) after a chance encounter. What they don't know is that he is a gangster, seeking to defect to the British Secret Service before his rivals have a chance to murder him, and he has chosen them as his lifeline. The couple's recruitment is followed by a deadly chase, taking them from the souks of Marrakech to London, to the French Open final in Paris and finally to a thrilling climax in the Swiss Alps.

What a disappointment this was. Sounded really exciting and tense but absolutely boring. Full of bad language which I detest. It is a shame that iTunes don't give you warnings as for me it is a massive turn off. I can handle it if the movie is fantastic but not when it is so badly acted, clichéd and boring. Don't rent!
  • Slow burner...then premature end

Not an 'un-enjoyable' film exactly, but left me feeling like there should have been more. Mark Gatiss was under-used, Ewan McGregor was sadly wooden, and Damian Lewis was the only character who developed really from predictably shady to likeable in the end. The end, though, came too quickly and you felt slightly cheated out of a third of a film... Feel like I need to read the book as this didn't feel like typical John Le Carre.

I'm not sure why everyone is being so negative about this film, the plot is typical John le Carres, well written and very worthy of a watch, I rented it rather than buy it based on reviews from another famous site which gives it 6/10 and I think I'd agree with that. The acting is accomplished and the plot feels more real, if you are looking for explosions, car chases and action then this won't be for you, but its a classic old fashoined spy thriller and the relationships between the characters build up in a believable way, it has tense (not edge of your seat) moments and whilst this wouldn't be in my top ten list of films, I like all the actors in it and am glad I didn't just take the negative reviews on here and dismiss it, each to their own I guess.

Whilst the DP does a fine job, the rest of them dial it in, including the curse of any film, Ewan McGregor. A terrible waste of money and effort, the Producers should be ashamed. Don't bother.

Story premise is good but script terrible and just not believable. Really rather poor and I doubt anyone will be left anything other than disappointed.
  • Poor writing

The writing was so bad it grated. So boring even the actors looked bored through out. Looks like they were about to look at their watch to see when the day would finish. I knew this film was poorly reviewed but not poorly enough as far as I'm concerned. The fact that so much money and acting talent was wasted on this film is a crying shame considering how difficult it is to finance good films.

Lacklustre and disappointing, one of those movies which is used to keep the big names busy until their next big project comes along. The movie would have benefitted from more suspense and tight scrapes. Wish I hadn't rented it.
  • Dull, Bland and Unrealistic

You could find more tension in a dentist's waiting room. The story takes ages to get going and whimpers out. At some points I felt like I was watching a bad student film. Avoid, unless it's free and you have something else to occupy your mind with.

You can only wish that the last Bond movie was this good
