Description

Two-time Oscar® winner and star of “Downton Abbey”, Dame Maggie Smith, recreates one of her most celebrated roles – the singular Miss Shepherd – in The Lady In The Van, Alan Bennett’s big-screen comedic adaptation of his own iconic memoir and honoured stage play. Based on the true story, Miss Shepherd was a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. What began as a begrudged favour became a relationship that would change both their lives. Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived for all those years, acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner reunites with Bennett (The Madness of King George, The History Boys) to bring this funny, poignant, and life-affirming story to the screen.

What was Maggie Smith doing wasting her enormous talent on this drivel? Pointless, self indulgent, rather nasty and insufferably tedious.

Also beautiful. A ridiculous concept, I suppose - but so well executed and emotionally engaging, I doubt you will question the scenario. But I hope you love the drama. I did.

Ok, so Dame Maggie Smith is a great actress. Anyone who can pass as a dowager in Downton Abbey, and a tramp in this movie is versatile. But the film itself? Possibly the most depressing and boring film I have had to endure for a long time. The writer Alan Bennett talking to the 'real life' Alan Bennett idea did not work for me at all. It was like trying to watch a movie and someone reminding you the whole time that it is only a movie. The dialog was dull and lifeless. I expected a comedy. This is really a tragedy. How can the miserable existence of the lady living in the van be anything but.

The Lady in the Van was a delightful movie to watch. I found Dame Maggie Smith funny and fantastic actress to watch as the Lady in the Van. I found Alex Jennings to be a fantastic actor as Alan Bennett. The story line is very funny and sad at the same time as Maggie’s character is a mad person who had suffered a tragic moment in her own past. This isn’t just a Lady in the Van but an honest old woman who only wants redemption for what happened. Alan Bennett was guiding her through until the end. A truly recommendable movie to watch. Just brilliant.
