Description

As adolescence looms, six intelligent, bright, teenage brothers have spent their entire lives locked away from society. Their only knowledge of the outside world is gleaned from the movies they watch obsessively, and recreate meticulously. Nicknamed ‘The Wolfpack’, the brothers spend their childhood re-enacting their favourite films using elaborate homemade props and costumes. With no friends and living on welfare, they feed their curiosity, creativity, and imagination with film. But when one of the brothers ventures outside, it sparks a fire in the Wolfpack to follow suit. Can they integrate into society and still maintain their close-knit brotherhood?

What a brilliant film about a reculsive family where the kids are never let outside, sometimes not even once in a whole year, but live in Manhattan, New York. We've had a few stories in the past few years of kids being locked up for years; there's no sense of abuse here - it's more that the children never questioned that outside their appartment was dangerous and so they were complicit in their seclusion. Living their lives by re-enacting scenes from the movies they watched, this is a gripping story. Even more fascinating is their slow and then unstoppable break out into the outside world. A must see.

The most poignant and inspiring documentary I've seen this year, The Wolfpack explores the real lives of six brothers trapped in their cramped and dingy New York apartment, with nothing else to do but watch and re-enact films. When Mukunda makes the brave decision to escape and see the real world 'in 3D' - their lives are turned upside down. This is an extraordinary story that gets better every time you watch it. Recorded over several years, director Crystal Moselle utilises the hundreds of hours of footage, and edits in such a intriguing way - you are sucked in as a viewer from the very start. I would definitely recommend - not only for documentary lovers, but anyone who wishes to see an uplifting modern tale of creativity and courage.
